Is Beauty frivolous? – Part Two
by Marilyn Churchill
If physical beauty was fulfilling enough, we wouldn’t hear so many stories about beautiful people still living miserable lives – and worse!
Some time ago, I stood before the mirror putting on my make-up, getting ready for my first day on a new job, while Mom, who happened to be visiting at the time, looked on. “I think you’re very brave!” she said, out of the blue. It struck me then, and still remains, the nicest compliment I’ve ever received. I find that it takes bravery to deal with life’s ever changing face, and not count each change as loss.
Leonard Cohen wrote, “There’s a crack in everything – that’s where the light comes in.” There’s comfort in the idea that behind the beauty we see, we can sense a transcendant Beauty that is so perfect, so loving, and inclusive – that everything else pales in comparison! I find courage in that thought!
The question again: is Beauty frivolous? I say no. Look for Beauty everywhere. And if you can’t find it, create it – cracks and all!
